We finally beat Esher which is something we have not done since the sixes tournament 3 years ago!
By Steve Isaac
Lucien and Ollie A's highest club scores win the game at a canter with 2 overs to spare
Esher 186 - 6
HSCC 187-5 win by 5 wickets
What a tremendous squad effort yesterday's game was! We have to congratulate James on running the game so well with us having
had four changes in the two days leading up to the game. I said to Aidan in the morning it was a good day for chasing and having lost the toss and seen Esher choose to bat I was delighted with the efforts in the field and with the ball. Tom struck early before tweaking something in his foot and James finishing the 3rd over for him as Tom had to leave the field. Ollie H was generating good pace and deserved a wicket as he found the edge of the bat twice with the ball going through where 2nd slip would have stood. Frankie exerted some control bowling economically 1-24 from his 5 overs including the wicket of Ollie Ognall caught in the deep by Tim Stewart whilst running in at speed it was a great catch. James bowled very well, Danny came on at a bad time when Adam Baidan (75 not out) was hitting hard. Lucien learnt a very valuable lesson in containment against their hitters but was expensive whilst learning which is fine. Bowling round the wicket into the rough on the batsman's legs is a new skill for him and balls across where hit and over pitched balls went for 4 too. When he did get it right it was classy and there will be more of that to come I am sure. Jack C bowled some short balls that were hit and got a wicket with one of the very many good length balls he bowled and is doing well in his death bowling role. So the bowlers did well to cover for Robbie, Joe BB and MJ who were missing for this game.
Our fielding positions where very good when compared with theirs which I will come back to ....
The boys were so hot and looked exhausted at tea but they believed they could chase and they did it very well.
Ollie and Lucien put on 42 for the first wicket in the 6th over (Esher reached 60 in the 10th) in a really good start. It was to be Lucien's day
as he hit hard and their field was so far in he could hit over the top and once he got going he brought up his 50 with a big six!
He kept hitting hard the bad balls and defending the good ones, Tim struggled with the slower pace having scored an Adult 50 the day before
on this pitch. Well done him, but he fell foul of that slower pace and was bowled bringing James to the wicket for a fluid 21 runs and the score up to 139 in the 17th over, on rate and ready for the next batsman to take on the hitting role. It was Ollie A and he hit well scoring 42 from 27 deliveries including only 7 dot balls in a fine display of aggression which took us over the line with two overs to spare.
Now back to that fielding... We had backward point and cover point in place for our quicks and saved many fours, we had sweepers out through the whole innings and saved many fours there too in total contrast to Esher who tried to contain and conceded lots of boundaries to balls hit over the top and through backward point, their loss and well done James for getting it right.
So we lie joint second in the league with 20 points alongside Ashtead who we play this Sunday, its now very exciting as Guildford lost to Reigate and the team that wins goes joint top as Guildford have played one more game!
Such Drama, our season has just got better and better, well done to Caroline and Delia and a special thank you to Kate and Patrick who helped with ground duties and Jonathan for his help with the scoreboard. Money was made of the club in the bar, many thanks Patrick for that too. It is our club to turn up to and treat as our own. The boys will then learn too that it is their club too if we show them...
Man of the Match Lucien for his fine 60 and top score in the SJIL, I would like to see someone get a higher score than that very soon !
