Memories of Ashtead 2016 come flooding back

As the captains walked out to the middle the mood in the Horsley camp was high coming of the back of a win the previous week. Oxted won the toss and decided to bat which for a skipper who loves a chase was the best outcome of the toss.

Dan and Michael took the new ball to have the combination of left are spin and right arm quick coming at the batsman, although for the first 4 overs of the power play were kept tight with the score only being 20 the lack of wickets allowed the batsman to cut lose, taking dans third over for 12 but in the same over he did take a wicket with a slower ball looped up to Jarred at cover to take a simple catch. However Michael kept it tight from his end going for 18 runs of his first 3 overs of the power play. Oxted ended the first 6 overs on 1/40. James Croft then came on for Dan he then managed to get their dangerous opener out in his first over with a beautifully disguised slower ball making the bails start to flash in the night sky. Michael then finished his spell at the other end to have figures of 0/29 off four overs. Replacing Michael was the top bowling performer from last week Rohan Sharma he bowled as if he was just continuing his spell from last week immediately bamboozling the batsman with a variety of deliveiries, he and James managed to keep it tight in the middle overs. As something had to give one of the Oxted batsman came charging down the wicket to leave a sharpe stumping from Luke to send the batsman on the way. Alec Fleming then came on to replace James and showed why he's our favourite Fleming bowling with some serious heat only going for 6 runs from two overs the captain then taking him off to keep a couple of overs up his sleeve for the end of the innings, at the stage in proceedings Oxted were 78/3 off 13 overs, after Rohan took another wicket this time with an LBW he ended his spell of 4 overs taking 2 wickets for 20 runs. Ending off the innings was James Croft bowling 2 overs and Alec bowling two from the other end. James' last two went for 22 runs as the batsman targeted a short leg side boundary. Then came the action Alec taking a wicket in the 18th over with a smart catch from Rohan at backward point. In the 20th Alec took two wickets and was on a hatrick ball which narrowly missed the stumps. Alec followed this off with two more inch perfect deliveries and then the batsman making the mistake of running through to dead eye Trimbo who had two direct hit run outs in the last over. Oxted finished on 133/9 134 to win for the Canes.

Once again it came to Michael and Callum to open up, in a role reversal it was Michael to take the two ball duck this time being caught at mid off trying the hit over the top. This could however been a blessing in disguises as it brought in Luke who looked in fine touch from the outset. Callum then beautifully guided two fours one to third man off the outside edge the other through fine leg off the inside edge, then came some controversy with Callum taking a quick single the bowler seemed to get in his way as the tried to make his ground, questions of obstruction quickly dismissed by both umpires Callum on his way for 8. Up stepped the man the myth the legend that is Timmy Ozanne to join Trimming at the crease. These two although not the quickest mixed some lusty blows with smart running to get our score up to 67/2 off 10 overs but then in an attempt to make a third Tim was ran out having made 21 from 21 balls I think his personal best strike rate ever. To come in at 5 was Jarred who looked in a strong position from the outset not letting the run rate get him down making the correct decision in most cases unless he tries that stupid cut shot! It came to Luke to retire having brought up his 50 with a brilliantly struck 4. Dan the man hero from the previous week coming out to bat. The run rate stayed in control as the canes needed 25 from four overs in the 17th over was when Dan showed his match winning ability taking a bowler who from his previous 3 overs had only gone for 10 Dan hit a huge 6 over mid wicket and another 4 taking the over for 10 sadly he got out trying to repeat the 6 over mid wicket. Rohan hero with the ball then came in, him and Jarred managed to run well between the wickets for the next two overs bringing the required score down to 3 to win off the last, very similar to the three to win from last years clash with Ashtead. This time there was no Ed Barber to ruin it. Rohan on strike first ball he was caught luckily the batsman crossed Jarred on strike 3 required off 5 balls Jarred then takes a single 2 required from 4 balls Alec tries to steal a quick single and in unfortunately run out 2 required off 3 balls Jarred back on strike again, with a small shuffle and a big swing of the bat the ball goes back over the bowlers head for 4 crushing the demons of the last over defeat to Ashtead last year. Well played to the canes onto the next on.
