Opposition total out of reach as they hit 20 boundaries against our 5

Guildford won the toss and batted first on a glorious sunny morning at Twinn's field.
We would have bowled first as it was our stronger suit today with the notable absences of
Tim (educational),Tom Reid (Back) and Robbie who was away at County.
Cody played a near faultless innings which followed his first hundred for school earlier in the week. To tell you how good it was and put some perspective on it their next top scorer made just 22.
When we did exert some pressure on them it came in the middle overs from Frankie and Zain and then not for long enough,
The first wicket only came in the 11th over with 58 on the board when Frankie had Brian Yeldham Lbw, he soon got Ford out stumped by a neat piece of work from Ollie behind the stumps. Bad balls were too many and the ball kept reaching the boundary far too often as their innings rocketed from 100 after the 18th wth 60 more runs in the next 7 overs despite a late rally by Jack at the death where you miss I hit ended Cody's great knock. MJ picked up two wickets and maybe could have bowled sooner. Joe BB bowled nicely at a difficult time.
The boys were a bit shell shocked and our reply started poorly when Jamie was out second ball of our innings. Freddie Lacy who bowled it looked me straight in the eye ! he, Will Ayton and Van Bilton are all 14 years old and 6 foot somethings. Lacey had pace and bounce making it hard for our batsmen to play....... they bowled better lengths than we did and fewer bad balls and we kept losing wickets. MJ was caught by an enormous leap from lacy which resembled a basketballer slam dunking in a game!. We soon got behind the rate after some nice stroke play from James and some rebuilding work with Frankie steadied the reply. 47 after 15 overs however created some scoreboard pressure and the cross batted shots against the leg spin of Toby Finch from Jack and Oli did not come off this time and we slid to 47-6. The game had gone and steady batting saved us from embarrassment with a 30 run partnership ( I am creating an honours board of 7 dot balls in a row or a 30 run partnership for the boys to think about). The running between the wickets was poor and I do not like to see the second run being refused in order to keep the strike for the next over which happened in four consecutive overs. Some late blows from Danny and Jack showed intent that was lacking throughout our innings and I may change the batting order round next week to allow hitters further up the order so we bat alternately between hitter and stroke maker throughout our innings. I will try to talk to the boys first about it but may need to rely on parent mail to do it as I cannot talk to them directly its hard to get messages across as to what I am looking for each week.
I told the boys that we are in a league that is full of the best clubs in Surrey and they will win some and lose some this year. They will visit quite a few premier league clubs and should enjoy their summer. They earned their place in the SJIL after last years performances put us in the top four in our league and two other leagues were combined to form this one. With good availability and continued efforts we should have a great summer of cricket.
see you next week
